When Women Were Knights

When the Knights of Labor was formed in 1878, the delegates took what was then a very advanced step. The preamble to their constitution pledged, "To secure for both sexes equal pay for equal work." (A goal as yet to be achieved.) alt Mary K O'Sullivan - The first woman salaried organizer for the American Federation of Labor, 1892.
alt Florence Kelley - 1859-1932, the NCL's first leader, traveled the country giving lectures on working conditions in the United States.
alt Jane Addams - Vice president of National Woman's Trade Union League, Serves as member of Chicago Board of Education, Helps to found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Elected 1st woman President of National Conference of Charities and Corrections (later National Conference of Social Work), 1st Vice President of National American Woman Suffrage Association , 1st head of National Federation of Settlement and Neighborhood Centers, Helps organize Woman's Peace Party, elected 1st Chairman, Presides at International Congress of Women at the Hague, Netherlands, Founds Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, serves as President 1919-29, Helps found the American Civil Liberties Union and 1st American woman recipient of Nobel Peace Prize. alt Mary McDowell - 1854-1936, Sometimes called the "Angel of the Stockyards," Mary McDowell preferred to think of herself as Concerned Citizen. The Head of the University of Chicago Settlement from its inception in 1894, she reached out from that base to promote trade unionism and safer working conditions, woman suffrage, inter-racial understanding, and reforms in municipal waste disposal. She joined with others to establish a national Women's Trade Union League, ....

Equal Pay Act

Women's Bureau initiatives between 1977 and 1981. The Bureau made significant contributions to the Department's affirmative action efforts to expand opportunities for women in apprenticeship programs and in the construction industry. Policy involved amendments to Executive Order 11278 by President Carter. 1978 set hiring goals of 6.9% and hiring timetables for women on federally funded projects. The goals were never reached.
